Music Therapy is the use of music as a tool to help others reach non-musical goals. Example of goal areas include but are not limited to improving speech, motor, self-regulatory, emotional processing, cognitive, and memory skills. Using a holistic/integrative approach with techniques acquired being trained as a Neurologic Music Therapist, we can work together to help you reach various goals while utilizing the knowledge of how music affects the brain while incorporating humanistic perspective throughout the Music Therapy treatment process.

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines Music Therapy as “the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.” (2024)

Kenneth Bruscia, a pioneer in the field of Music Therapy defines the profession as “a reflexive process wherein the therapist helps the client to optimize the client’s health, using various facets of music therapy experience and the relationships formed through them as the impetus for change.” (2016)

What is Music Therapy?

Born and raised in Kansas City, I travelled to Boston where I began my Music Therapy journey at Berklee College of Music, but eventually transitioned back to Kansas City where I ended up completing my Undergraduate degree in Music Therapy and Psychology at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC). I completed my Music Therapy internship at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where I completed work in oncology, NICU, PICU, burn unit, and procedural support. After becoming board-certified in 2019, I spent time in various areas of Chicago and its suberbs providing individual and group Music Therapy services to a variety of populations and settings, such as outpatient mental health clinics, special recreation associations, children and women fleeing domestic violence, hospice, special education, assisted living, skilled nursing, Alzheimers, Dementia, and more. I am now in my third year living in Brooklyn, NY where I provide individual and group services in different boroughs. I have also begun providing Sound Therapy services with individuals suffering from chronic stress, and in groups in the corporate setting for business promoting mindfulness and wellness in their workplace.
